Dental Implants in Mackay

Missing a tooth, or living with one that can't be saved? Dental implants are one way to replace it. A small post placed in the jaw that holds a crown, bridge or denture in place.

Whether implants are right for you depends on your gums, your bone and your bite. We'll assess all of it and tell you honestly what your options are, including the All-on-X implants.

Open Monday to Thursday 8am–5pm, Friday 8am–3pm. 2/33 Brisbane St, Mackay.

What are dental implants?

An implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone where a tooth used to be. Over time, the bone grows around it and holds it firm, and a crown, bridge or denture is then fitted on top.

What makes implants different from a bridge is that the implant stands on its own. A bridge is anchored to the teeth on either side, which means preparing those teeth. An implant doesn't rely on its neighbours.

That's not the same as saying implants are the right answer for everyone. They need enough healthy bone to sit in, gums in good condition, and a bite that works. Treatment is staged over months rather than weeks, because the bone needs time to fuse to the post before anything goes on top. Our dentist will go through all of this with you before you commit to anything.

What an implant can do

Fill the gap
on its own

An implant is anchored in the jaw rather than to the teeth either side, so the neighbouring teeth are left alone.

Restore how
you chew

A well-planned implant is designed to handle normal biting and chewing. How it performs varies from person to person.

Made to
match

The crown that goes on top is made to suit the colour, shape and size of your other teeth. We confirm the look with you during planning.

Book an assessment and we'll talk through what's realistic for your situation.

Help keep the bone working

Bone around a missing tooth tends to change over time. An implant is designed to sit in the bone and be loaded by it.

Implant options

How many implants you need depends on how many teeth are missing and where they sit. These are the common approaches.

 A single
tooth implant

One implant and one crown, for one missing tooth. The teeth either side aren't touched.

 Several
teeth

Where more than one tooth is missing, implants can be placed to support a bridge — so you don't necessarily need one implant per tooth.

Implant-supported dentures

Implants can be used to hold a denture more securely in place, rather than relying on fit alone.

We'll work out which of these applies to you at the assessment.

How implant
treatment works

Implant treatment is staged over months, not weeks. Here's the shape of it.

Step 1
Assessment
We check your gum health, bone support and bite, usually with x-rays, and talk through whether an implant suits you or whether something else would serve you better.

Step 2
Planning
If you go ahead, we plan where the implant sits and what goes on top, and give you an itemised quote before anything starts.

Step 3
Placing the implant
The post is placed under local anaesthetic. Some tenderness and swelling afterwards is normal, and we'll explain the aftercare.

Step 4
Healing
The bone needs time to fuse to the implant. How long this takes varies between people and depends on your healing and the site.

Step 5
The crown or bridge
Once the implant is stable, the final crown or bridge is made and fitted, and we check the fit, bite and look with you.

Step 6
Reviews
We see you for reviews and normal check-ups to keep an eye on the implant and the gum around it.

Do you have any questions about the stages? Ask us at the assessment.

Is an implant right for you?

Not everyone is a candidate, and we'd rather tell you that at the assessment than partway through.

An implant may suit you if:

  • You have one or more missing teeth, or a tooth that can't be saved

  • Your gums are healthy, or a gum problem can be treated first

  • There's enough bone to hold the implant, or bone can be built up

  • You're able to keep up daily cleaning and regular check-ups

  • You're comfortable with treatment staged over several months

What to know before you decide

Implant treatment is a surgical procedure and, like any procedure, it carries risks. Our dentist will explain the ones that apply to you so you can make an informed decision, and you can read more on our treatment risks page.

Results vary between individuals. An implant is designed to be long-lasting, but how long it lasts depends on your gum health, your bone, your bite and how you care for it. Implants can need repair, and the crown on top can need replacing over time. Anyone who tells you an implant is permanent is overpromising.

If implants aren't recommended for you, we'll talk through the alternatives that are. We aim to find an option that works and fits your priorities.

We're local,
and family-run

We're a family-owned and operated practice in Mackay, and we're here for the reviews and the follow-ups, not just the placement.

one practice

Dr Tim Hanly and Dr Danica O'Brien are both dentists here, and both completed their Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University. Dr Tim has been in private practice since 2016.

The restorative work happens here

Implant treatment often sits alongside a crown, a bridge or an extraction. We do that work ourselves rather than sending you between practices.
